Activities
In the Finca-Hostería El Retiro you will find everything that you need to enjoy a relaxing vacation close to nature or if you prefer you can enjoy some, or all, of the following activities:
- Walking Trail (Bird watching) Take a walk through a beautiful tagua palm forest, cross two hanging bridges, watch the local vegetation, watch colorful birds (bird watching link) and finally reach our observation deck on top of a tree. This is our highest point in the Hostería.
Approximate walking time: 40 min.
Suggestions: Use comfortable shoes, bring water, camera and binoculars.
Charge: No charge to our guests, $1.00 for visitors
- Canopying (Zip Line)
Feel the freedom of flying through the air hanging only from a harness, while you watch the breathtaking view of the ocean.
Suggestions: Only for persons over 12 years old (minimum height requirement and under adult supervision)
Charge: $1 for guests, $2.50 for visitors
- Climbing Wall
Test your physical strength and condition climbing our 9m. vertical wall. Built with real stones from the region.
Suggestions: Only for persons over 12 years old and under adult supervision.
Charge: $4/climb for guests, $5/climb for visitors (includes climbing equipment)
- Jr. Climbing Wall
This is our 3m. climbing wall for the little ones, so that the can practice their climbing skills.
Suggestions: Only for children between 5 and 12 years old. Adult supervision required.
Charge: $2 for guests, $3 for visitors
- Horse Carriage: Horses and Miniature Horses
Your children will enjoy an unforgettable carriage ride with miniature horses in our track, or the whole family can take a trip in the carriage for large horses. The carriages can be taken to the beach to ride.
- Horseback Riding Take a ride on horseback around the Hostería or on the beach of Olón.
Suggestions: Wear pants, preferably have experience riding horses
Charge: $8/hour guests, $10 for visitors
- Mountain Biking Visit Alex's waterfalls or get to know the Ruta del Sol biking through the Chongón-Colonche mountain range and arrive in Pto. López or Ayampe.
Suggestions: Wear sports clothing, bring water or sport drinks, use sun block. We provide helmets.
Charge: $8/hour for guests, $10/hour for visitors
- Cow Milking
Show your children the cow milking experience or give it a try yourself.
Sschedule: 5h00 and 14h00
Charge: Free for guests and visitors

- Honey and Beehives (coming soon)
Have you ever wondered how bees produce honey and how it is extracted from beehives? Would you like to learn more about the organization of bees? We invite you to see our presentation on beehives followed by a practical explanation while viewing our observation hive. At the end you will be able to taste our great 100% natural honey.

- Handcrafts (coming soon) See how the handcrafts from this region of Ecuador are built using tagua, paja toquilla and sapan de banano. You could even try to make your own handcrafts

- Whale Watching (July to September)
Humpback whales visit our coast from July to September, if you are visiting us in that time you can enjoy the following tour:
• 9h00 Leave Pto. López and head to Isla de la Plata
• Whale watching on the way to the island
• Hiking on the Isla de la Plata (aprox. 2 hours)
• Box Lunch the Isla de la Plata
• Snorkeling
• Return to Pto. López
• 17h00 Arrive at Pto. López
The tour includes a guide from the Parque Nacional Machalilla, a box lunch, and snorkeling equipment.
Charge: $30 per adult and $15 per children (does not include entrance fee to Parque Nacional Machalilla)
- Relaxing Massage Relax to the max and recharge your energies in our pyramid massage room with aromatic oils and relaxing music.
Duration: 1 hour
Charge: $20
